This is the author's discovery of her history, and that of her parents and extended family. Her father escaped with Helen and her mother from Prague and fled to Canada.
Years later Helen read these letters, which was the only form of communication with their family . She then followed thetrail of letters back to Europe where she found living witnesses who could attest to the letters' contents. She has here interwoven their stories and her own into a compelling narrative of suffering, survivor guilt, and overcoming intergenerational obstacles when exploring a traumatic past.
