Memoir by Martha Dodd who, when in 1933, her father, the historian William Edward Dodd was appointed United States ambassador in Berlin, decided to accompany him to Germany. As a twenty-four-year-old, she arrived in Europe in the summer of 1933 with her parents and her brother. In 1939, after her return, and still before the beginning of World War II, she published her book on the four and a half years that she spent there.
