Novel about an inmate of Auschwitz who was a master violin craftsman, and was commissioned by the Kommandant to build a violin. If he failed, he would be handed over to the camp doctor who would torture people in the name of sciencetific experiments. He thus knew that failure meant a fate worse than death.
