DescrizioneThis is an Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. It was given to Bob (Joseph) Adams in commemoration of the Second World War.
Adams was born in Manly on 28 October, 1926 to Eva and Sidney Adams and lived in Vaucluse with his parents prior to enlistment.
In March, 1945 - having completed his fifth year at Sydney Boys' High School - Adams enlisted in the Australian Army. The war was drawing to a conclusion and was over by the time Adams finished his training in March, 1946.
He was, however, sent to Rabaul in New Guinea as part of the Advanced Medical Stores of the 118th Australian General Hospital, where he worked as a clerk/typist.
During the war, Rabaul was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Navy and only surrendered in August, 1945. In the months following its return to Australian control, the 118th Australian General Hospital was an important centre for the treatment and rehabilitation of military and non-military units.
Adams was finally discharged in December, 1946 when the Australian Army was demobilised.
Adams continued to live in Sydney with his wife Pearl until his death on 16 April, 2008, at the age of 81.
