TitoloInterview with George Grojnoski and his concentration camp jacket
DescrizioneThis is an interview done with George Grojnowski about a concentration camp jacket which he donated to the Museum (M2004/025). It was part of a project to video survivors talking about objects they donated. The interview was done in his home and was conducted by Shannon Maguire and was filmed by Kate Disher-Quill. The interview is 58 minutes and 17 seconds.
The jacket was issued to George when he was transported from Czestochowa where he was working in an iron foundry to Buchenwald. He arrived in Buchenwald January 1945. In the testimony he describes the arrival and the process of being issued the jacket. He talks about being issued with the number (about 5minutes in) and how that erases one’s identity. He talks about weatherproofing the uniform against the cold(5:46) and other clothing he wore. He speaks about his reasons to keep the jacket. George also talks about some photos - one of himself as a young boy, one of him with his mother and Aunt and one of him with a zionist youth group. George answers questions about what it means to be a guide at the SJM and what he hopes visitors learn. The end he talks about how difficult it is telling his story.
