The Yad is carved in the shape of a hand with pointed index finger; a freshwater pearl has been fixed to one end. This object was handcrafted by Harm (Harry) Ipenburg, a non-Jewish Dutchman from the town of Utrecht, whose father, Johannes Ipendburg, was involved in the Dutch and French Resistance during World War II. Due to Johannes' involvement in these Resistance movements, the Ipenburg family was harrassed by the Gestapo. As a result of his own experiences during World War II, Harry Ipenburg became deeply affected by the Nazi persecution of the Jewish people, and subsequently developed a lifelong interest in Judaism and the State of Israel.
