Creatore Thomas Smily (maker)
DescrizioneMustard Spoon from a sterling silver cutlery service for about 12 people, which was brought to Australia by the donor's great-great-grandfather Moses Joseph in about 1860. The pieces are London silver 1859 (see info on hallmarks in inscriptions/marks) and elaborately decorated motif of shells and scales. They are fine examples of the decorative excesses of Victorian times whereby rich merchants could display their wealth. Here is an example of the emancipist made good, who by the ostentatious display of silver was able to impress his colonial contemporaries with his new economic power.
