DescrizioneDouble sided hand-written letter to Sophie and Leslie Caplan from Rosa and Alexander Ioffe, 6 January 1987. The letter was sent to the Caplan’s in Australia via the Australian Embassy in Moscow, along with a copy of a typewritten letter by Alexander Ioffe to the General Secretary Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev (M1995/014:001).
The letter records the Ioffe’s hardship as refuseniks in Soviet Russia, and their ongoing attempts to immigrate to Israel for over ten years. It mentions that Alexander is resorting to a hunger strike, which he undertook to protest the bureaucratic difficulties that barred the family’s migration. The two families met when the Caplan’s travelled to Moscow in September 1985.
After this letter was written, the Ioffe’s managed to migrate to Israel with their daughter Tamara, son Dima and his family.
