TitoloTzedakah for the Sydney Hebrew Philanthropic and Orphan Society
DescrizioneBrass tzedakah box used by the Sydney Hebrew Philanthropic and Orphan Society. This box was used to collect any money offerings for the charitable organisation.
The Sydney Hebrew Philanthropic and Orphan Society was formed in 1833 to assist ‘aged and distressed members of the Jewish faith by weekly pensions, donations, and small loans without interest.’ After its formation, demand for provisions steadily increased due to the increasing Jewish migrant population. It continued to fundraise for provisions through subscriptions and an Annual ball.
The Society was amalgamated with the newly established Sir Moses Montefiore Jewish Home in 1890 and continued to provide care to the Jewish community throughout the twentieth century.
