DescrizioneKetubah (marriage contract) verifying the marriage of Dinah Selig and Nathan Blumenthal. The couple were married in the York Street Synagogue, Sydney on 1 November 1876.
Dinah arrived in Australia in 1865, a dressmaker at age 15, with her mother Rieke and five brothers and sisters. The Selig family immigrated from Frederickstadt, Denmark in December 1864 when the town, along with the rest of the state of Schleizwig Holstein, was acquired into the German empire. Rieke’s husband Joseph had died in 1863, so she left her home a widow with six children; Jacob, Aaron, Sarah, Dinah, Phineas, and Guldah. They arrived in Australia 3 March 1865 on board the Himalaya.
Nathan Blumenthal was born in Poland in 1836, although it is unclear when he came to Australia. Dinah and Nathan had three children together: Grace Blumenthal, born 1883, Deborah Blumenthal, born 1885, and Joseph Blumenthal, born 1886.
The Ketubah is part of a collection of documents and photographs relating to the Selig family, who are among the oldest families in Australian Jewish history.
