In June 1943, Pius XII drew attention to the belief that Jews tortured Christ and defied his attempt to save them. He defined the Church's concern for suffering in terms of Roman Catholics and those 'not yet joined" to the Church. The Jews who were suffering and being killed in the Holocaust were apparently not eligible for inclusion - unless the pope believed that they separated themselves from their ancient beliefs and were potential joiners. This contrasted with Jewish thinking at the time
