At the moment of their production and appropriation in the public sphere, the VTlodrome d'Hiver (Winter Cycling Stadium) in Paris, erected in 1994 to mark the site of the round-up of Jews prior to deportation in 1942, and Berlin's Denkmal fnr die ermordeten Juden Europas (Monument for the Murdered Jews of Europe), inaugurated in 2005, became the focus of nationwide debates in their respective countries. Argues that sites of memory produce not only social consensus but also dialogue and competition between the victims.
