TitreEdith Elter
DescriptionThis photograph depicts Edith Elter, the sister of Gertrude Elter, the sister-in-law of Denis Frederick Carver (born Fritz Schnitzer) and the daughter of Hermann Elter. The reverse has a handwritten note stating “. Even during the short time of our separation, you always have me around you. Yours Edith” The photograph is dated 1939.
The image and the note are extremely intimate, evoking a sense of love and loss. Due to the photograph being taken and sent in 1939, the sender is assumed to be her family such as Hermann Elter. This would have been when the systematic persecution of Jews started to begin in Germany and Austria.
