TitreTallit in Velvet Bag
DescriptionBlue and white Tallit (prayer shawl) in original navy embroidered velvet bag. This Tallit was passed down through three generations of the Davis family. It first belonged to Bernard (or Bernhardt) Davidovitz, who was a woodcarver from Bucharest, Romania. He married Elizabeth Machen in 1897. The couple moved to Australia and had a small pawn shop on Oxford Street in Sydney. His family lived above the shop, including his son Samuel Davis (no longer Davidovitz), who was born in 1906. Samuel became a shop manager and married Esther Freeman at the Great Synagogue in Sydney on 6 Feb 1937. Samuel inherited the Tallit and eventually passed it to his son, Richard Davis, who donated it to the Museum.
