DescriptionThis is a Frank Hurley Photograph of Members of the Australian 1st Division Pioneers digging out a gun belonging to the 104 Howitzer Battalion which was trying to haul their gun forward after the advance near Hannebeek, in the Ypres Sector. Identified are: Sergeant (Sgt) J Howell (leaning on a shovel, behind the Howitzer, second from the left); Private Sadler, (centre foreground beside the Howitzers wheel); Sgt Pallbrook (standing behind Sadler); Lieutenant McCullagh (or O'Toole) (extreme right smoking pipe). (None of the identified AIF members are Jewish however Frank Hurley is a well known Australian photographer important in Australia’s wartime history).
