DescriptionMachine woven wall-hanging, rug-style, of a portrait of Theodor Herzl (1860-1904). Herzl is leaning over a railing on the balcony of the Hotel Drei Konige in Basel, gazing upon a group of pioneers who are approaching the Tower of David in Jerusalem with the sun rising behind the tower. Above the scene is a Star of David. Surrounding this depiction is a border of oriental design in red and white. There are woven tassels (blue, yellow and red) on the top and bottom borders.
The original photograph was taken in 1897 by E.M. Lilien on the occasion of the First Zionist Congress.
The donor, Hyman Segal, treasured the item which belonged to his mother, Sarah Segal (nee Lutman), who was born in Safed, Palestine. Sarah's mother gave her the tapestry as a gift upon her departure from Palestine in 1912 at the age of 18, to come to Australia.
