Antisemitism found in the Arab and Islamic world today is a relatively recent phenomenon. There has been no lack of negative attitudes to Jews among Muslims going back to the earliest period of Islam. Some of the fundamental notions about Jews and Judaism are enshrined in the Koran. Modern antisemitic ideas of European origin appeared in the Middle East among the Arabic-speaking Christians of Syria. Following the Damascus Affair of 1840, the blood libel began to take root in the popular imagination of the Middle East
