The separation of early Christianity from Judaism happened gradually over several centuries. In the 4th century, Christianity began to spread rapidly when Constantine raised it to the status of the state religion. Separation on a physical level also took several centuries. At first, Christian populations lived in close proximity to Jewish populations. By the 3rd century, an estimated 3 million Jews lived in most of the Roman provinces adjoining the Mediterranean
