Description

Immigration is a powerful force and the Jewish population grew and became a small but thriving community. The social harmony was dented in the 1890s due to immigration. Victoria experienced its first taste of antisemitism as the "Bulletin" and other newspapers defined national identity along racial lines. In 1946 and 1947 the "Bulletin" warned that swarms of Jewish refugees would soon enter the country. Under pressure Calwell ended the family reunion program and placed a quota on Jewish arrivals
