In the 17th century, the Netherlands was known for it tolerant attitude to a wide variety of religions. Henry Jessey was a founding father of the English Baptist movement and was deeply involved with both Jews and religious extremists in England and Holland. Jessy had previously only been known as the author of the narrative of the Whitehall Conference called by Oliver Cromwell in 1655 to discuss the readmission of the Jews to England.
