Description
Spain was a neutral country during World War II, and specific reference to the Holocaust was absent from the prevailing narrative. An important change occurred in the 1970s. The economic and political transformation of the country meant that it needed a modern educational system in order to transition to becoming a member of the European community. On 10 December 2004, the government declared 27 January as official Holocaust Day, and in 2008, Spain became a member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). For the first time teaching about the Holocaust has been included in the Spanish educational curriculum
