The question of how to situate the Holocaust in a wider history of violence, either within the context of other Nazi genocides or a more expansive context of violence throughout European or global history is again at the forefront of both Holocaust and genocide studies. The question of whether the Holocaust can be meaningfully written about within the history of European colonialism and imperialism is frequently bound up with the debate surrounding the state of Israel and the legitimacy of its occupation of Palestinian territory
