He seeks to understand the reality of the camps by comparing and contrasting different types: paradise, hades, purgatory, hell and gehenna. The death camps constituted hell where finally one's individuality was at stake. The tattoo in Auschwitz replaced one's name and all attempts to avoid a bestial existence constituted resistance
