DescripciónProfessional photo of Dorrit Boehm (later Mahemoff), age two. Dorrit Mahemoff (nee Boehm) was born on the 27th of April, 1940 in Shanghai, China. Her parents, Irene and Edgar Boehm, were Jewish refugees from Germany. In 1939, the Boehms escaped persecution in Europe to Shanghai, which was one of the only ports in the world that did not require a visa. The family was interned in the Hongkew Ghetto by the Japanese, where Dorrit’s father, Edgar, worked as a waiter. In 1946, Edgar’s sister, Alice, sponsored the family’s immigration to Australia. After spending three months in transit in Hong Kong, they arrived in Australia on the 28th of October 1946.
