DescripciónAustralian and other prisoners of war (POWs) in Stalag IX-C, Bad Sulza, between Erfurt and Leipzig, Germany, 1941-1944.
The donor, Hal Finkelstein, is standing more or less in the centre of the group and has a circle drawn around him. The back is stamped “L. Wessner” and “Stalag IX C Gepruft”. According to handwritten note on back (probably by the donor) this was taken as a public relations exercise and the men worked in a plywood factory. Hal Finkelstein (WX4637) served in 2/7th Field Ambulance in the Australian Imperial Force during WWII. He was taken Prisoner on 1 June 1941 at Sphakia on the south coast of Crete. He spent the following three years as a POW in German camps until his release in 1944.
