Scherff sustained his injuries in the bomb blast at the Wolf's Lair Headquarters in Rastenburg, East Prussia, on 20 July 1944 during the attempt to assassinate Hitler. Scherff was a military historian appointed by Hitler to the OKW (Obercommando der Wehrmacht - High Command of the Armed Forces) in May 1942 to compile a history of the war. He was a great admirer of Hitler and, after being captured by the Americans and learning of Germany's surrender, he shot himself on 24 May 1945. This is a copy of the famous original photographgraph by Heinrich Hoffman, from Hoffmann's archives.
