DescripciónIdentity card issued to butcher, Erich Stiel, on 10 May 1935. This card permitted Erich to visit the slaughterhouse and cattle yard in Cologne, Germany.
Erich was born on 19 October 1907 in Eschweiler, Germany to Herman Stiel and Karoline Kayfmann. He had two brothers; Rudolf born in 1904 and Kurt who only survived for three days. in 1927, Erich began work at a butchers shop in Eschweiler. In c.1938, Erich sold the butcher's shop to the Dolphin family and fled Germany alongside Rudolf's family and Rudolf's wife's family.
The Stiel family arrived in Tel Aviv where Erich worked at another butchery. Erich married Rosa Hirsch in Palestine in c.1940. They had two children; had two children; Joram Stiel who was born in 1942 and Edna Cox (nee. Steil) who was born in 1945.
The Steil family fled from Palestine in 1948 following the outbreak of war in Palestine, arriving in Hobart later that same year. The donor recalled that during this time, Erich worked selling hotdogs at Aussie Rules matches and unfamiliar with the currency, regularly gave more change than the amount paid.
Upon the Steil family's arrival to Sydney in 1950, Erich and Rosa lived in a house on Aurthur Street, Homebush. He worked at the family's meat produce and small goods store "Meapro" in Liechhardt. His son, Joram, also became a butcher.
Erich passed away in Sydney on 9 November 1979, aged 72.
