TítuloTapestry
DescripciónFramed tapestry of a Minnesänger (German lyric poet and singer) performing with mandolin a love song to a young woman. Set in an idyllic landscape, the tapestry reflects an image of late-medieval aristocratic culture. Embroidered by Feige Herskovic, Czechoslovakia, pre-war, and completed by Henrietta Hardy, Australia, post-war.
Nathan John Hardy (Herskovic) lived in Perecin, Czechoslovakia (now part of Ukraine). He married Feige Weiss in 1938 and they had two children, Leo and Judith. He survived forced labour and numerous concentration camps; his wife and two children were murdered in Auschwitz. After the war, Nathan went home where he found the only remaining possession of his wife was her half-completed tapestry. He brought it with him to Australia, arriving in November 1947. In Australia, he changed his name from Herskovic to Hardy. In December 1947 he met Henrietta Strauss who was on holiday from New Zealand, having escaped Vienna in late 1938. They married in April 1948. Later, she took the tapestry and completed it in a gesture that both honoured and memorialised her husband’s first wife.
Feige Herskovic stitched most of the left hand side of the tapestry; her stitches are neat and refined. The second wife Henrietta Hardy's stitches can be seen in some of the tree trunks; her work is less skilled and she uses a different thread. A third person was commissioned to complete the tapestry - her work is distinguished by different handiwork, especially seen in the ground/grass at the bottom right, as described by the donor David Hardy, son of Nathan and Henrietta.
