In 1939, the Boehms escaped persecution in Europe to Shanghai, which was one of the only ports in the world that did not require a visa. The family was interned in the Hongkew Ghetto by the Japanese, where Dorrit’s father, Edgar, worked as a waiter. In 1946, Edgar’s sister, Alice, sponsored the family’s immigration to Australia. After spending three months in transit in Hong Kong, they arrived in Australia on the 28th of October 1946.
