Descripción

Recounts the history of the early Jewish places of worship in Brisbane, from the first organised meeting for worship in 1865 to the establishment of the current synagogue in Margaret Street in 1886. Its main object is to identify the specific locations of these buildings, and to provide as much information as possible on the physical surroundings where the Jewish community in Brisbane worshipped in those early years. Inevitably misconceptions have arisen over time as to the location of these early synagogues, and some of these have proved to be remarkably durable. The significance of such misconceptions is a question raised by this study.
