Descripción

Margit Slachta (1884-1974), the first Hungarian woman MP, was a Catholic activist on behalf of the oppressed Jewish population of Hungary in World War II. The author summarises her pro-Jewish activities of this period, which included a personal plea put to Pope Pius XII as a result of which a deportation of Jews planned for Spring 1943 was cancelled. Although Slachta could not prevent the worst atrocities, she did provide a rare example of courage and nobility in a dark time.
