This essay will look at Afro-Germans and the issue of diversity in terms of redefining the designation "German", since German society is grappling with multiculturalism and multiethnicity. Afro-Germans have been a presence for a century and confront Germans with the issues of German identity, race and racism. In 1993 Afro-Germans numbered about 300,000. Those born after 1965 have assumed a more vocal and militant stance. German society must confront and deal with its racist tendencies, and government support and commitment is imperative for this
