About 9,000 German Romani, and 10,000 Reich citizens were committed to Auschwitz. For these individuals, who defined themselves as Germans, persecutions by their fellow countrymen forced them to confront and question their sense of national identity. Many of those who were liberated in January 1945, faced further hardship and discrimination in the postwar world
