The war provides us with a glimpse of the position of the Jew in Germany under extreme conditions. Soldiers at war had to make a new life for themselves in the trenches. Jews had to take part in this world although it demanded a more thorough assimilation. After the war many had a rude awakening and recaptured the liberal and enlightenment tradition
