Ukraine was one of the principle settings of World War II. Over 1 million people were deported from the east and south to the German Reich for forced labour. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fought in the Red Army and died. From 1945 the only remembrance policy was the official one prescribed by Moscow which Ukraine was obliged to follow
