In May 1940 France was occupied by Germany and this lasted until August 1944. The Germans began to implement anti-Semitic decrees as soon as they entered the country. The vast majority of French Jews, 75,000-77,000 were deported to Auschwitz and died there. Others lost their lives in French detention camps. Among those who lost their lives were 25,000 of Sephardi and Mizrachi origin.
