Mary Engel was born in Hungary where she survived the war. In 1947 she emigrated to the United States where she became supervisor in the postdoctoral clinical psychology program at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and later moved to Harvard.
Her research focused on mental health problems of children and adolescents and the lives of street children.
