As a young Cologne student, Herbert LIffmann sought an answer to the problem of his identity as a German Jew in the Zionist movement. Zionism appealed increasingly to the younger generation of German Jews during the thirties. He left Germany in 1939 secured a visa to Australia where he was again confronted with the question of his elusive identity
