The story of a Jewish family in pre-Nazi Germany and what happened to them after the Nazis seized power. Based on the true history of a family the author knew, it depicts the political and moral downfall of Germany following the National Socialist rise to power.
The Author: Berges was a German-Jewish refugee and activist who founded the Union of Jewish Artists and the Jewish League for Culture in Hamburg. After fleeing Germany in 1935 to avoid a concentration camp, he wrote the book while living in exile in Shanghai.
Historical Significance: It is noted as an early report and fictionalized account of the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany.
