The British boat Patria was one of many refugee boats used by European Jews before and during W.W.II to escape the Nazi persecution. Barred from entering Palestine, Patria, carrying 1,771 visaless passengers, was not allowed to debark in the Haifa haven, and was blown up on November 25 1940 with a loss of 257 lives.
