According to Jewish sources between 13,000 and 15,000 Jews passed through Portugal during the Holocaust. The regime did not turn over Jews to the Nazis. Approximately1,000 Hungarian Jews survived the Holocaust due to Portuguese diplomatic protection. Between 1942 and 1945 several hundred Jews emigrated from Portugal to Palestine
