BeschreibungA parchment warrant scroll provided to Sir Samuel Cohen Sir Algar Henry Stafford Howard granting him the coat of arms which can be used by him and his descendants. The scroll has three of his large red wax seals attached to the bottom by blue ribbon. The design of the seal is depicted in the upper left corner.
The warrant scroll is accompanied by an original artwork on the armorial bearings of Sir Samuel Sydney Cohen. Sir Samuel Cohen was born in Sydney in 1869. He was an accomplished businessman, active in a number of charities, both Jewish and non-Jewish causes. He was knighted in the King’s coronation honours in 1937. The warrant is a historically significant document recording a high recognition of a member of the Jewish community in Australia at the outbreak of the WW2. Sir Cohen was deeply disturbed about Nazi treatment of Jews in Germany and involved in organizing assistance for them from the mid-1930s: he founded and was president of the Australian Fund for German Refugees, which by 1938 had helped 600 men and women to come to Australia where work had been found for them. He was also patron of the local Mizrachi Palestine Committee, a world wide organization for the return of Palestine as a Jewish homeland.
Sir Samuel Cohen was grandfather of the donor.
The parchment scroll is safeguarded in an original elongated red synthetic leather case. The lid bears three royal monograms in gold of the King George VI (1895 to 1952) who reigned 1936 to 1952. He was father to current Queen.
