Beschreibung‘Remember Martyrs’ is a mix media (ink, pastel & watercolour) artwork done by John Coburn in 1996. At the bottom of the work is the main gate of Auschwitz. Above are two symbols of the Jewish people; a menorah and a Magen David. Within the Star of David, written in Hebrew is zahor which translates to remember. There are two further banners in the piece with Hebrew. Stylized flames rise through the artwork. The painting is signed by the artist and with the inscription “Remember Martyrs-for the Jewish Museum, Sydney”.
John Coburn pursued religious and spiritual themes throughout his life, his abstract work reflected this and set him apart from mainstream post war Australian painters. His work was committed to the use of organic shapes reflecting religious ideas and feeling. Coburn is renowned for his meticulously executed works on paper, which represent his abstract style; incorporating bold design, stylised shape and luminescent colour.
