Trudy Weil (nee Krausz) was born in Vienna on 16 March 1933 to Fritz and Katharina (nee Sreininger). Trudy and her parents escaped to Albania by 1941. They made their way to Italy where they spent some time in 1947 in a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) displaced persons camp in Via Unione in Milan. She was issued a stateless persons passport by the international Red Cross in Genoa in 1947. Italy had developed into a major assembly center for refugee emigration to Palestine. During their years of operation, the Milan and Adriatica displaced persons camps were active athletic and cultural centres.
The Krausz family arrived in Australia in 1948 and lived in Killara. Trudy was naturalized as an Australian citizen by 1953.
