.The deportations began in July 1942 and were implemented through a Jewish Council, appointed by the occupiers, with assistance from the Dutch police and civil service. Jewish despair was the result of the overwhelming military might of the German forces in the Netherlands and the readiness of the leaders of the Dutch civil administration to ignore the persecution of the Jews. In 1943 the occupiers declared the Netherlands "judenfrei", but there were still Jews in hiding. Just over 13,000 Jews survived the war in hiding, some saved by Jews
