Jacob's ladder

Story of a young man whose world was turned upside down when the Germans bombed his home town in Bialystock, Poland. He was moved to the Ghetto, his life was saved by a Nazi officer, he survived his own execution, and served in the Russian army. He was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in the Urals and 5 years in exile.
