BeskrivelseMezzuzah, handmade by Barnett Phillips, Sydney, c1850. Made of tin, now disintegrating. It comprises a parchment called a klaf (scroll with Hebrew text) inscribed with the Shema. A Mezzuzah is traditionally attached diagonally to the right hand door frame of a Jewish dwelling. It serves as a reminder to those who live there of the Jewish connection to heritage, land and God. Translated into English, Mezzuzah roughly means ‘doorpost’.
The Shema itself is also extremely delicate and has been removed from the Mezzuzah.
