David Smith enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on the 7 October 1943. He was assigned to the ground crew in the signals discipline. He served in Melbourne and Townsville and in January 1945 he was sent to New Guinea until February 1946. There his troop helped establish one of Australia’s airbases. David was official discharged 12 June 1946 with the rank of Leading Aircraftman.
