BeskrivelsePrayer book - Mahzor (High Holidays). Large format, beautifully printed Hebrew by Anton Schmid, Vienna, 1794. Volume 3. Title page is illustrated with 2 figures - one of Moses holding the Ten Commandments and two cameo images (one of Noah's Arc). In German is printed "Vienna. Printed by Anton Schmid, Royal Privileged Printer of Hebrew Texts" and in Latin is printed "Cum Licentia Superiorum". History of this prayer book is unknown. This fine old volume was printed by Anton Schmid (1765 - 1855) in 1794. Schmid was a famous Christian publisher of Hebrew books and prayer books by famous Hebrew scholars. When prevented from printing, he appealed to King Francis II and obtained royal permission to publish Hebrew texts. Hence "Cum Licentia Superiorum" which translates as "With superior licence permission". A good sample of fine printing of the period.
