In 1942 Joseph was approached to do some driving for the local Marquis. In August 1942 Joseph was driving on one of such mission with a truck loaded with cauliflowers but hidden underneath were guns and ammunitions. He was stopped by a patrol and shot in the left leg while trying to escape. He was interrogated and deported to concentration camps.
